After New Year the island exhales. January is dry, bright and noticeably calmer; villa availability improves and minimum stays shorten compared with the festive period.
For those who want the Caribbean at its most relaxed — beaches, long lunches, little to organise — it is one of the best times to go.
Good snow, quieter slopes.
Between New Year and the February school holidays, the Alps are often at their best: colder temperatures, good snow conditions at altitude and far fewer people on the slopes.
Choose the resort for the group, not for its reputation. Strong skiers, a family with young children and friends who ski until lunch want three different places — and sometimes three different parts of the same resort.
