November sits in the gap between autumn and the festive season. It is not automatically a cheap month, but for several destinations the best conditions arrive before Christmas demand reshapes pricing and availability.
The weather turns in your favour.
Through November the southwest monsoon gives way and conditions steadily improve, with calmer seas and longer spells of sunshine as the month goes on. Showers remain possible; the most settled weeks tend to begin around December.
The advantage is timing. Villa categories that are difficult to secure over Christmas are usually easier to find in November, and resorts are calmer before the festive weeks begin.
Match the island to the travellers. Couples tend to want privacy and a quieter island; families need a beach villa with a pool, a shallow lagoon and a kids’ club worth using; three generations are best served by two-bedroom villas or residences rather than several separate rooms.
Its best weather begins.
November is when Dubai’s outdoor season properly begins: warm, dry days and evenings that make terraces, the beach and the desert a pleasure rather than an effort.
The city rewards a clear decision between beach and city. Beach hotels suit families and anyone who wants long days by the water; Downtown and DIFC suit couples who travel for restaurants, galleries and the city itself.
Before the lights, and during them.
Early November is New York at its most comfortable: crisp, bright days and a full cultural calendar. From the last week of the month the city moves into its festive season; Thanksgiving falls on 26 November this year, with the parade that morning.
Where you stay changes the experience. Midtown near Fifth Avenue puts the festive city on the doorstep; the Upper East Side is quieter and residential; Tribeca, SoHo and the West Village suit those who travel for downtown dining.
Thanksgiving week is high-demand for hotels, theatre and restaurants. Preferred room categories and good tables for that week are worth arranging well ahead; availability should be checked for exact dates.
Choose the coast first.
Mexico in November is really two decisions. On the Pacific, Los Cabos enters its dry, settled season, with the whale-watching season beginning around December. On the Caribbean side, the Atlantic hurricane season formally ends on 30 November, and the Riviera Maya moves into its more reliable months.
The coasts suit different trips. Los Cabos is desert meeting ocean, with resort living and dramatic scenery; the Riviera Maya offers calmer sea, cenotes and Mayan sites, with Tulum for a smaller, boutique scale.
